Just Add Shoyu

Dear JCCC Supporter,

The JCCC Heritage Committee is dedicated to the preservation and documentation of Japanese Canadian history and culture. In addition to its ongoing archiving, events, and programming, for over a year, members of the Heritage Committee have been gathering recipes as well as pictures and memories to compile a one of a kind documentation of the Japanese Canadian experience. This material will be compiled into a cookbook aptly titled ‘Just Add Shoyu: History and Culture Through Food’.

Like many cultures, our food, through its tastes, smells, presentation, and use at events and special occasions, helps to define us as individuals and as a community. This cookbook will allow us to share our culture and story with younger generations and provide the opportunity for members of other communities to experience, appreciate and understand us better.

The aim of ‘Just Add Shoyu’ is not only to showcase Japanese Canadian recipes but also to capture the stories of Japanese-Canadian families and how food continues to play an important role in their lives. It reflects the uniqueness o f our community’s heritage and our history in Canada.

As this cookbook is scheduled to be complete this year, we need the financial support of the community to help with its publication and turn the vision of the ‘Just Add Shoyu’ cookbook into a reality. An income tax receipt will be issued for your tax-deductible donation. As well, all contributions of $100 or more will be acknowledged on a donor page in the cookbook. Donation forms are available at the reception desk for your convenience.

With your benevolent gift, the JCCC will be able to share the story of Japanese Canadian’s though the medium of food to future generations and to the community at large.

Thank you for your continued support,

Peter Wakayama, Russell Onizuka,
V.P. Heritage Chair, Cookbook Committee
